도잉아트는 오는 2021년 11월 24일부터 12월 24일까지 <일루밍II>전을 개최한다. 2018년 선보였던 일루밍 전시의 후속으로 현대인의 모습 진짜와 가짜, 실제와 허상에 관해 생각해 볼 시간을 갖고자 한다.
다양한 미디어의 홍수 속에서 살고 있는 현대인들은 여러 가지 경로로 미디어에 노출된다. 일상적인 삶을 자극적으로 드러내기 위하여 개인의 모습을 화려하게 포장하기도 하고 다른 모습으로 조작하기도 한다. 그러한 과정에서 왜곡되고 변질되는 현대인의 모습은 ‘진짜’와 ‘가짜’, ‘실제’와 ‘허상’에 관해 돌아보게 한다.
작가의 상상으로 시작하는 예술은 그 자체가 가상이다. 작가의 예술적 진리는 가상으로서 그 가치가 있다. 작가들이 캔버스에 그리는 선들과 채워가는 면들, 입체로 만드는 조형물과 그것들이 설치되는 공간들, 그리고 그렇게 서로 어우러지는 작품들은 가상의 세계 안에 존재한다.
그리고 이러한 가상현실은 우리의 상상을 자극하여, 가상과 현실의 경계에서 유희를 상상케 하고 꿈꾸게 만들어 준다.
현대 사회의 미디어의 확장으로 포장되는 이미지들은 예술작품에서도 마찬가지로 실재가 사라지고 환상 환영으로 만들어지는 허상의 이미지와 연결된다. 가상의 세계에서 이미지들은 무수히 복제되며 원본이 사라지고 예술적 진리를 잃은 채로 복사본이 되어 허상으로 존재하기도 한다. 하지만, 우리는 예술적 이미지가 현실을 매개로 한 가상의 이미지인 동시에, 추상적인 복사본이 아닌 현실을 담는 진실이라는 점을 기억해야 한다.
환상을 의미하는 일루전(illusion)과 밝게 비춘다는 의미의 일루미네이트(illuminate)가 합쳐진 일루밍(illuming) 전시를 통하여 다섯 작가가 풀어내는 그들의 야기들을 함께 상상하고 꿈꿔 보시기를 바란다.

Illuming II will be on exhibition from November 24th to December 24th, 2021 at Dohing Art Gallery. Elaborating on the principles of the first Illuming exhibition from 2018, this exhibition invites you to re-think modern perceptions of what is “real” and what is “fake”.
In response to the omnipresence and constancy of media in modern life, the artists in this exhibition recreate images and forms found in everyday life through various methods of distortion, deterioration, and embellishment. The re-interpretation of everyday images into two-dimensional forms- via lines and shapes on canvas, and three-dimensional forms- via sculpture and material manipulation, interact with the space they inhabit so that the artists’ imagination, intention, and message can be experienced. It is important that in this experience, we do not forget that artistic works exist not as copies of reality but as interpretations of reality that hold their own truths. Through these various processes of re-interpretation, modern images are reimagined into forms that force us to question the absolutism of what is real and what is fake.
The artworks in this exhibit draw upon various methods of illusion to represent the liminal space in which art tends to exist, a space where what is real and what is imagined is blurred through the artists’ intention. The intersection of art, artistic intention, and space work to stimulate a viewer’s imagination and forces one to reconcile with the boundaries between the depicted virtual reality and reality itself.
The exhibition name “Illuming” comes from the combination of the words “Illusion”, representing distortion and fantasy and “Illuminating”, representing the act of light and character of brightness. We hope that through “Illuming II” you will be able to experience the dreams and stories of the five artists that are featured.
